The Portuguese Algarve coast

Portugal

Portugal is located in South Western Europe bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, West of Spain. It has a population of around 10,000,000 people and is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Southern Portugal has a warmer and drier climate than its Northern counterpart with Mediterranean temperatures reaching an average of 28 degrees Centigrade during a long summer season.

As a nation they have a long history of exploring, discovering and founding settlements all over the world. Traces of this worldwide historic presence may be seen in their vast monumental, artistic and archaeological heritage. The Portuguese language became one of the most widely spoken in the world, and the Portuguese people were privileged in being exposed to so many different civilizations which you can clearly see in the Portuguese race today. Lisbon is the capital and largest city in Portugal and is memorable for many historical artifacts and buildings. Travel to Portugal is affordable with many low-cost flights readily available. There are several excellent airports in convenient locations for access to the most desirable locations such as Faro, Porto and Lisbon.

The natural advantages of a sunny country with such diverse geographic features have turned Portugal into an ideal place for practicing water sports and playing golf, offering modern tourism facilities, and quaint and personalized means of accommodation, such as ‘turismo de habitação’ (privately owned homes ranging from wonderful farmhouses to manor houses), ‘hotéis de charme’ or ‘pousadas’. The Algarve on the South West tip of mainland Portugal is a unique jewel where glorious sandy beaches and weather meets traditional and historic Portugal. The Algarve is hilly, and traversed with rich valleys. Its highest point is the mountain range of Monchique, with a maximum altitude of 906m (Peak of the Fóia).  The length of the south-facing coastline is approximately 155 kilometres. Beyond the westernmost point of Cape St Vincent it stretches a further 50 kilometres to the north. The coastline is notable for picturesque limestone caves and grottoes, particularly around Lagos, which are accessible by powerboat. Praia da Marinha, Lagoa was classified as one of the 100 most beautiful and well preserved beaches of the world.
